Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know which level class I should be taking?
At the American Dance Institute, you are always welcome to observe a class (at no charge), prior to taking your first class. For the absolute beginner, we recommend Introductory level classes. For those who have not danced in a few (or a number of) years, we always recommend beginning in lower levels, so you may slowly reintroduce your body to the language and movement. It is much easier (and rewarding) to move up in levels, rather than demote your initial efforts.
The Advanced-Beginner, Beginner I & Beginner II classes are for those brushing up on their skill, or looking for a slower pace. Upper levels such as Intermediate or Advanced should have three of more years of experience of dance.
Can I just walk in to a class, or is registration required?
All adult classes are available on a walk in basis.
How much are classes?
The single rate for a class is $17. You may purchase a ten class card, valid for three months from the date of the first class taken, for $140. If you hold a student ID or are members of AGMA, AFTRA, SAG, or EQUITY, you are entitled to a professional rate of $12 per class. Workshop rates vary, but are $20 per workshop, unless noted otherwise.
What ages are in adult classes?
American Dance Institute offers a nurturing environment for all adult ages. Ages range from 16-60. If it is your first time to the studio, we ask that you telephone 301-984-3003 or email adultprogram@americandanc.org for advice as to class selection.
What should I wear?
Wear something you feel comfortable in while you are moving. However, do not wear clothing so tight that will restrict your movement; nor too loose, where you spend your time making adjustments.
Shoes: Ballet requires ballet slippers, modern requires bare feet, and flamenco requires flamenco shoes. Ballet slippers and flamenco shoes may be purchased at a dance store. In Bethesda there is Artistic Dance Fashions.(For more information on flamenco footwear, please visit www.dcflamenco.com.) Intro/Beginners are allowed to come to the first class without the proper footwear, but must make the proper investment soon thereafter.
